SOVS-UCC awarded $25,000 Grant for Community Eye Care Project

The School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has received a $25,000 grant to launch the Optometric Service and Community Outreach for Practical Experience (Opto-SCOPE) project, funded by Optometry Giving Sight.

Opto-SCOPE aims to establish mobile eye care units within Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) compounds in the Central Region.

This initiative seeks to provide ongoing optometric services to underserved communities while offering final-year optometry students valuable clinical training under the direct supervision of faculty members.

Unlike traditional one-time outreach efforts, Opto-SCOPE introduces a sustainable model of continuous community engagement, enhancing public access to essential eye care and fostering the professional development of UCC’s future optometrists.

The project is led by Dr. Michael Ntodie and Dr. Enyam Morny, with active participation from the School’s faculty, who will supervise and guide students in delivering community-oriented eye care services.
